Fast forward 24 years later – and I am the boss. I’ve been the boss for more than a decade. And you know what? I LIKE being the boss.

Here are some frequently asked questions about starting your own successful online business:

How much money do I need to fund the start-up of my online business?

To me this is an easy question to answer. You need as much as it takes to train you to learn everything you need to do.

When I’ve read other answers to that question elsewhere online experts start talking about how much you need to pay a graphics designer, a website developer, an SEO specialist, emarketing professionals… You know how much money you’re talking about to launch even a small site with all those people helping you?

Over $1,000 minimum. Over $3,000 if you’re doing it right and with a chance of success. Over $5,000 if you want a good chance at online success with your new ebusiness.

Taking the other side – I always think you should train yourself. This way you’re not spending money on your site, you’re investing money. The difference is you’re training yourself to be the boss not only this time – but, if you do projects in the future – you’ll be the boss there too.

Now that there’s no need to learn much actual code to get your online business up and running – there is no reason in the world why people of average intelligence can’t learn everything they need to in order to build their online business.

I’m attending college right now to be a pharmacist (insert any lifelong career position here). Everything I like is online. I’m online 15 hours a day, even during class. Should I finish two more years of college or go straight into internet business?

I have a friend that asked me this so I wanted to add it to the FAQ. In her case she was already very internet marketing savvy and had two websites that were doing well. One was a forum.

While I can’t answer for everyone. There are sixteen years olds that have started successful online companies themselves. Heck, some are younger. If you know what you want. If you know what you’re good at. If you believe in yourself and have some resources – like knowledge, friends, and enough cash to get you through the beginning stages as you’re ramping up – I say, Go For It.

So few people do what they love. Even if you find out internet business is not for you – at least you found out after chasing something you WANT. Go after something you WANT with all your heart, not just accept a Pharmacist position because you’ll make $100,000 in a few years. You could make that in one year with a successful online business too. Which would be more fun? Which would expose you to more fun people and experiences? I’d say making $100K as a successful online business owner. Maybe I’m jaded?

Which is the best payment solution to use for my website? Paypal?

There are those that love PayPal. About 40% of people prefer it. That’s a large percentage. But, another 40% prefer using straight credit card processing. So, offer both. The other 20% prefer check, payment options, atm transfers, and other solutions which you don’t have to offer and you’ll be safe enough. Not many people offer that.

You also should look into adding Google Checkout as an option if Google traffic is of any consequence to you – and it should be.

If I order your online training courses – will I get the updates if there any in the future?

Yes and no. If you order 1 individual lesson, like the “Twitter Lesson” you can have the updates to it forever.

If you join the 34 Lesson Course you are a member as long as you choose to be a member and have access to all training but, if there are updates after you let your membership expire you won’t get those updates. Same with PRO course. If you buy an individual PRO lesson like, “Your site WILL sell” you can have the updates to that course indefinitely.

Forum membership is in effect as long as you choose to remain a member.

Here’s an example:

Jayme subscribes to the EBusiness PRIMER 34 course on June 15th for $197. She uses the course for the full 60 days and enjoys the forum interactions as well as having access to everything so she can go back and review courses over and over. On August 14th Jayme joins the ongoing membership plan for $18.90 per month for the next year. For that entire next year (8/14/09 to 8/13/10) she has full access to all the courses in EBusiness PRIMER 34 and their updates. She has full access to the forums and can directly email me to ask any question she has about her ebusiness.

Mike subscribes to the EBusiness PRIMER 34 course on June 15th for $197. He uses the course for the full 60 days and decides he doesn’t want to spend the extra $18.90 per month and lets his membership expire on August 15th. Mike can’t go back and see the EBusiness PRIMER 34 course or get back into the forums. Mike can still write me questions directly.

Can you refer me to a good SEO / Web Developer?

I’ve done this in the past – and referred people to SEO groups that were supposedly legit – and that I personally had good experiences with in the past. Unfortunately two of those recommendations turned around to bite me. I now refer everyone to myself for SEO and large site development. I have a friend that does small sites quite well and that I trust completely.

SEO is a very important piece of the puzzle that can go very wrong if someone decides to use your site / web hosting for unethical practices. Get referrals from someone you trust!

Does PR (Page Rank) mean anything anymore?

Yeah, great question. To me it means something. It means that Google cares enough about the site to warrant giving it a PageRank at all. It means that I can see if the PR is n/a, the site might be under a penalty for having malicious code in it, link buying, keyword stuffing, or something else. Or, maybe it’s just severely lacking in everything related to basic SEO.

A high PR isn’t had by chump sites – so, if I see a PR of 4 or higher I can guess that it’s a quality site that has been around at least a year and they’re getting decent traffic and interest in their site.

PR doesn’t relate much to search engine ranking anymore. There are PR 1 sites that outrank PR 5 sites on some terms. About.com has many PR 6 sites. They’re usually not found at number 1 for any keywords. Why is that? PR doesn’t relate to high SERP results anymore. I’m glad we have PR though – just for a glimpse of what Google thinks about the site.

This is just a clever euphemism for marketing. You’re going to be marketing and marketing and marketing for years – forever really, there’s no point in ever stopping. Marketing makes or breaks businesses. Online businesses are no different in this regard than traditional businesses.

Online marketing is a different beast. You can slay this beast with the online training courses we have here, but know that e-marketing, or online marketing, is forever changing and you’ll need to make it a lifelong effort.

To me, online marketing is a lot of fun. Somtimes it’s a drag – but, when I think back on what I’m doing – I’m marketing MY business, not someone else’s. I benefit when things go right – ME. That’s pretty exciting and something I always have energy for.
